What is renewable natural gas?

Renewable natural gas (RNG), also known as biomethane, is methane gas produced from sustainable biomass sources, including animal waste, sewage treatment plants, landfills, and food waste, just to name a few.

What are the benefits of RNG?

  • Reduces greenhouse emissions – By capturing and converting methane from animal waste into RNG, the greenhouse gases released are approximately 21 times less potent than methane released directly into the atmosphere.
  • Reduces organic waste in landfills
  • New opportunities for farmers – Cow, pig, and poultry farmers can turn there animal waste into revenue.
  • Prevents waste runoff – Processing animal waste prevents run-off into local waterways and reduces groundwater contamination.
  • Versatile energy source – RNG can be used in homes and businesses, in manufacturing and heavy industries, for electricity production and as an alternative fuel for transportation.

How does RNG fit into our energy future?

RNG is not yet produced on a large scale but it has the potential to be a reliable, low-cost renewable fuel option in the future. Additionally, RNG can be delivered to customers through the pipeline infrastructure we use today. With its versatility and accessibility, RNG is poised to play an important role in our energy future.
